Sharik Torres wasn't always in coffee. He taught, practiced veterinary medicine, and even worked as a zoo technician before recognizing something extraordinary happening in northern Puebla: small farmers were growing exceptional specialty coffee, but had virtually no way to get it to market.
In 2019, Sharik and his sister Hanniah founded Puhuac de Méndez to change that. They established a lean, focused operation that cups, classifies, and markets coffee for their members—most of whom are family, friends, and neighbors farming tiny parcels of less than one hectare. These micro-lots yield just 2-10 bags per year, processed at home with whatever infrastructure each family has available.
It's not easy. Without consistent outside funding, investing in equipment and training remains a constant challenge. But the coffee speaks for itself. Year after year, these producers deliver clean, vibrant cups that showcase what's possible when quality meets opportunity.
This is what we roasted fresh this morning—coffee from farmers who deserve to be tasted.
